Valley of Fires National Recreation Area is located approximately 4 miles west of Carrizozo, NM and is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This lava flow may be the youngest in the continental U.S. and occurred about 1,500 to 2,000 years ago. The 3/4 mile Malpais Nature Trail through the lava flow gave us a close up look at the lava surface and the many plants growing there. This was a great day trip and we enjoyed the beautiful scenery.
