McDonald Observatory, TX

Today we went to see the McDonald Observatory. We listened to an orientation briefing and then drove to the top of the mountain for a tour of the two main telescopes. We got to see how the domes moved to open and how they manuevered the telescopes which weighed something like 70,000 pounds. They were massive. I put a couple of clips on this post but it was hard to get it all in the viewer because of the limited space in the room. The elevation on top of the mountain was 6791 feet which is higher than Clingman's Dome which is the highest point in the Smokey Mountains.

What a beautiful deer!!! I'm glad he's in a protected area. That is the same observatory that we visited.
